The Philippine Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Philippine Rice Research Institute cordially invite you to attend the 34th PSBMB Annual Convention and Ecotour. This year's theme focuses on agricultural biotechnology, highlighting how modern tools in biochemistry and molecular biology are now being harnessed to better understand and improve the performance of agricultural crops and livestock. It will also feature the emerging agribiotech industry as well as its horizons. Current research in the health, marine, aquatic, and environmental sciences, and natural products  will complete the picture of the exciting developments in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Call for Papers
(now peer-reviewed extended abstracts, for inclusion in Convention Proceedings CD)

 

PSBMB members and interested participants are invited to send in their papers for oral or poster presentations. Papers must contain new data that has not been presented in any scientific conference in the Philippines.

Participants are invited to submit papers for oral and poster presentation. The extended abstract should be formatted according to the following guidelines (also see template in MS Word or Rich Text Format):
 

  • extended abstract maximum of 1000 words.

  • maximum of 3 figures and/or tables, maximum of 5 references.

  • MS Word (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf) written in English on an 8.5"x11" template with 1" margin on all sides

  • text in 12-point Times New Roman; singly-spaced, justified paragraphs; double space between paragraphs.

  • title of the paper in boldfaced capital letters and centered.

  • name(s) of the author(s) centered with two-line space from the title; presenter’s name should be underlined

  • author(s)’ affiliation centered and one-line space from the name(s) of the author(s); if more than one author, use superscript numbers to indicate affiliation.

  • indicate if the abstract is for oral or poster or YSF presentation.

Authors of accepted papers will be notified not later than 15 October 2007. Only papers of authors who register by 31 October 2007 will be included in the program and proceedings.

Young Scientists' Forum (YSF)
 

The Young Scientists’ Forum (YSF) was established in 1995 as a competition for outstanding undergraduate student research work. Interested participants are requested to send their abstracts for inclusion to the forum. (See call for papers above) Please indicate if the abstract is for the YSF.

Workshops

 

This year’s convention will introduce a number of workshops intended to promote and forge collaborations in research and capacity-building. Topics include:

 

  1. RNA interference(RNAi) workshop to be chaired by Dr. Antonio Laurena

  2. Crop genome sequencing workshop,  to be chaired by Dr. Gabriel Romero

  3. A workshop on a proposed raduate program consortium in molecular biology and biotechnology, to be chaired by Dr. Cynthia P. Saloma

  4. Molecular microbiology workshop

 

Workshop participants should have serious intent to pursue and contribute to a collaboration in the area. The workshop output will be a general workplan, including fund-sourcing and networking strategies. Interested participants should indicate on their registration form which workshop topic they wish to attend, and submit a one-page capsule proposal or discussion paper.

Scientific Program

 

 

Ecotour

 

On Dec. 1, the last day of the conference, there will be an ecotour to the Banawe Rice Terraces, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site, which is about 5-6 hrs drive on chartered buses from PhilRice, leaving at 4am and returning at 10pm. The tour will stop at several attractions on the way to and from the terraces. The ecotour fees are included in the registration fee.

Call for Nominations for Awards

 

The PSBMB Board of Directors invites nominations for the awards listed below. The deadline for submission of nominations to the Awards Committee is 30 September. Nominations must be coursed through a member of the PSBMB Board of Directors. The nomination packet should include a nomination letter, summary of accomplishments, c.v., and photo of the nominee. Please visit www.psbmb.org for details regarding the criteria, nomination, and selection process.

 

  • PSBMB Best Researcher Award, for significant contributions and impact in an area of biochemistry, molecular biology, or biotechnology.

  • PSBMB Best Educator Award, for outstanding teaching performance and impact in an area of biochemistry, molecular biology, or biotechnology.

  • PSBMB Service Award, for outstanding, significant, dedicated, and consistent service and contributions to the PSBMB.

Election of the  PSBMB Board of Directors, 2008-2009

 

The members of the PSBMB Board of Directors for the two-year period of January 2008 - December 2009 will be elected during the 34th Annual Convention. The list of current officers and board members are on the PSBMB website. Nominees among the life members will be solicited from all members during the 1st day of the convention; elections will be held on the 2nd day.

 

 

About the Host

 

The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) is a government corporate entity attached to the Department of Agriculture that was created in 1985 to help develop high-yielding technologies so that farmers can produce enough rice for all Filipinos. PhilRice pursues this mission through research, development and extension in the Central Experiment Station in the Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija and six regional branches, with strong partnerships with other government agencies and private and public seed centers nationwide.

Payment (cash or check) to PSBMB should be done via the Bank of the Philippine Islands (Account No. 3080-0037-48, BPI Loyola-Katipunan Branch, Quezon City).

 

All pre-registrants must submit the completed registration form and a copy of the deposit slip with the name of the participant to the Secretariat on or before 31 October. Fax or electronic copies are acceptable for pre-registration, but the original deposit slip should be submitted at the registration desk on the day of the convention.

 

Students should include a copy of their valid ID or other proof of registration.

 

Only papers by registered participants will be included in the convention proceedings.

The PhilRice Central Experiment Station is located along Maharlika Highway in Brgy. Maligaya, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. You can take air-conditioned buses headed for San Jose from Baliwag Transit terminals in Cubao, Quezon City and in Grace Park, Caloocan City or from Victory Liner terminal at EDSA-Kamias Avenue, Quezon City. One-way fare is approximately P200, and the bus commute takes 3-4 hours.
