In celebration of the University of the Philippines’ Centennial Year, the National Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology - UP Diliman proudly hosts the Philippine Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s 35th Annual Convention. This year’s theme, “Transdisciplinary Research: Pushing the Frontiers of the Biosciences,” focuses on instrumentation, new & emerging technologies, and interdisciplinary cooperation for advancing the biosciences.

Call for Papers
(now peer-reviewed extended abstracts, for inclusion in Convention Proceedings CD)

 

 

Deadline for abstracts extended to October 15, 2008.

 

PSBMB members and interested participants are invited to send in their papers for oral or poster presentations. Papers must contain new data that has not been presented in any scientific conference in the Philippines.

Participants are invited to submit papers for oral and poster presentation. The abstract should be formatted according to the following guidelines (also see template in MS Word or Rich Text Format):
 

  • Extended abstract maximum of 1000 words
     

  • Maximum of 3 figures and/or tables
     

  • Maximum of 5 references
     

  • MS Word (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf) written in English on an A4-sized template with 1" margin on all sides
     

  • Text should be11-point Arial, singly-spaced and justified paragraphs, double space between paragraphs
     

  • Title of the paper in boldfaced capital letters and centered
     

  • Name of the author(s) centered and two-line spaces from the title; presenter’s name should be underlined
     

  • Author(s) affiliation are centered and one line space from the name of the author(s)
     

  • Indicate if the abstract is for oral or poster or YSF presentation.

Young Scientists' Forum (YSF)
 

New: Guide for YSF.

 

The Young Scientists’ Forum (YSF) was established in 1995 as a competition for outstanding undergraduate student research work. Interested participants are requested to send their abstracts for inclusion to the forum. (See call for papers above) Please indicate if the abstract is for the YSF. Hybridigm Consulting, Inc. will provide travel grants to all eligible YSF participants..

Post-Convention Workshops
 

This year’s convention will include one-day hands-on workshops on 5 December on the following topics:

 

  • Live-cell Imaging & Immunostaining
     

  • Spectral Karyotyping & Cancer Molecular Detection
     

  • HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography)
      

  • Flow Cytometry
     

  • Automated DNA Extraction & PCR

Only 5 participants per topic will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants can attend only 1 workshop. The fee of PhP 2000.00 is inclusive of 2 snacks, lunch, and kit. These workshops are designed for individuals planning to utilize these techniques in their own researches. Please email the secretariat for more details.

Directions to Convention Site

 

By private vehicle from Aurora Blvd/Katipunan
Coming from the south of Metro Manila via Katipunan go past Ateneo and Miriam. Make a U-turn after the Sta. Maria Della Strada Church and turn into C.P. Garcia. When you see the Balay Chanselor on your left and a brick building on the right side turn right. On the first intersection, turn left. The first building on your left is the NISMED.

 

By private vehicle from Quezon Memorial Circle
From the Quezon Memorial Circle turn into Commonwealth at Philcoa and enter the university. At the Oblation turn to the street on the right. Do not enter the academic oval; instead take the next left. Go straight a short distance and then turn left. The first building on your right is the NISMED building.

 

By public transport from Aurora Blvd/Katipunan
Ride a UP-Katipunan jeep and get off inside UP. Ride a UP-IKOT jeep and tell the driver you will be getting off at NISMED and he can tell you where to get off.

 

By public transport from Quezon Memorial Circle
Get to Philcoa and ride a UP-Philcoa or UP-Pantranco jeep to get inside the campus. Get off at the checkpoint on University Avenue (the pointed roof waiting sheds), and get on an IKOT jeep at the corner. Ride a UP-IKOT jeep and tell the driver you will be getting off at NISMED and he can tell you where to get off.

Call for Nominations for Awards

 

The Board of Directors invites nominations for the Best Researcher, Best Educator, and Service Awards. The deadline for submission of nominations to the Awards Committee is 30 September. Nominations must be coursed through a member of the PSBMB Board of Directors. The nomination packet should include a nomination letter, summary of accomplishments, CV, and photo of the nominee.

 

  • PSBMB Best Researcher Award, for significant contributions and impact in an area of biochemistry, molecular biology, or biotechnology.

  • PSBMB Best Educator Award, for outstanding teaching performance and impact in an area of biochemistry, molecular biology, or biotechnology.

  • PSBMB Service Award, for outstanding, significant, dedicated, and consistent service and contributions to the PSBMB.
