On May 19, 2023, the PSBMB-Visayas Chapter collaborated with UP Visayas – National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (UPV-NIMBB) and the Chem 145 (Biochem I) class of the BS in Chemistry program of the University of the Philippines Visayas in hosting a webinar via Zoom. Dr. Elmer-Rico E. Mojica, Associate Professor of the Department of Chemistry and Physical Sciences, Pace University, New York, USA talked on “Developing Possible Inhibitors for Amyloid Formation” a topic which illustrates the synergy of analytical chemistry and biochemistry in finding solutions to problems such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Type II diabetes, among others, for which the BS in Chemistry students manifest their great appreciation.
Ms. Christine Deaño, BS in Chemistry III Representative and Dr. Kurt Waldo E. Sy-Piecco, Chairperson of the Department of Chemistry, UP Visayas gave the welcome messages, while Dr. Vivian A. Topor, President of PSBMB-Visayas Chapter introduced the participants who are mostly students, teachers, and researchers from universities and institutions in Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and from outside of the Philippines. Acad. Mudjekeewis D. Santos, President of PSBMB graced the activity with his presence. The Chem 145 students efficiently facilitated the hosting of the webinar including the exciting sit-down Zumba as icebreaker.
An invitation to attend the PSBMB 50th Annual Convention on November 28-29, 2023, at the Manila Hotel, and the upcoming “Hands-on Training on Microbiological Techniques for STEM Teachers” to be hosted by PSBMB-Visayas Chapter were announced by Dr. Topor. Dr. Carmelo S. del Castillo, Director of UPV-NIMBB closed the webinar with an open invitation for collaboration.
